Izzy, The Guillotine

It’d taken more Light energy than he would have liked, but Izzy managed to make it to the Kanen Forest just in time. He’d had to exert himself, channeling his spiritual energy into his arms and legs to run faster and cover more ground, but he’d made it. And he didn’t even feel winded, if he was being honest.

It took a glance to get the scope of the battle. Hosenké was there, with what looked like the unmasked Red Face. Fox Fire, Kohlannis Hunger, and all their friends just a short distance behind them. There were only two enemies, but both of them were part of the Nine—even the Red Face, if only by association. Izzy had faced worse odds, but he would have to separate the kids from the demons before any serious fighting could begin.

Vehenort, his apprentice, pushed through the brush behind him, panting. “Master…”

“You made it,” he said, keeping his vision forward.

She responded by passing him Master Jo’s staff. Izzy still wasn’t sure why she had insisted that he take it with him, but as he hefted the weapon, he felt the slight hum of spiritual energy running through it.

I see, he stared down at the metal rod, it’s imbued.

Before he could change his mind, Izzy launched the staff at Hosenké who easily dodged it by simply stepping to the side, but the Priest had expected that. The rod lodged into the bark of a tree a few meters away, quivering from the force of impact.

A moment later, it glowed bright white, its imbuement activating, and Master Jo appeared beside it.

So that’s it, Izzy observed, she can teleport herself to her weapon’s location.

There was no time for greetings, Master Jo immediately erected a wall between the students and the demons, effectively blocking them from harm’s way. She even formed walls around Fox and Kohl, caging them in together.

Hosenké scoffed. “Those walls won’t stop anything.”

“They’re impenetrable.” Marlo’s voice held an air of pride. “You’re not getting through.”

“Will they disappear if I kill you?” Hosenké asked.

Marlo responded by opening her barrier and stepping through to the safe side.

Hosenké laughed. “I don’t need to get through your walls. I can just go around them.”

Just like in the observation room, black pools of Dark energy opened throughout the forest, allowing demons to crawl forth—except all of these pools were located on the other side of Marlo’s walls. With the students.

Shouts rang up through the trees as the trainees began to fight for their lives. Panic tore through Izzy but he kept himself calm by focusing on Master Jo. She grabbed her staff and immediately charged at her enemies, joined by Roaring Fire and a number of her brave students.

They can handle this, Izzy told himself.

“We only want the boy,” Hosenké said. “We don’t have to fight, but we will if we must.”

Izzy shook his head. “We’re not handing over KI.”

“Then you will die.”

Slaine stepped between Izzy and Hosenké, his eyes remained on the Priest, but his words were meant for the Birth of Carnage.
